LINCOLN, NE —
Today, nearly 600 medical professionals from across the state released an open letter opposing Initiative 434 and supporting Initiative 439. The letter follows Governor Pillen’s offensive and propaganda-filled press conference on miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies in which he and state officials referred to one woman’s pregnancy loss story as “misinformation.”

“As Election Day nears, the medical community has united to be a trusted voice Nebraskans can turn to for clarity on the two abortion-related ballot measures. From medical students to leaders of medical organizations, the people who care for Nebraskans at every stage of their lives encourage everyone to vote against Initiative 434 and vote for Initiative 439. Many medical professionals would prefer to stay out of the political fray, but the intentional lies, confusion,  and misinformation spread by politicians and our opposition have reached a point where they can no longer sit idly by. They know the chaos the current abortion ban has caused in the healthcare system. They see the unnecessary pain inflicted on women and families because they can’t control their own medical decisions. They also understand the danger of Initiative 434 – it will make the current ban permanent and leave the door open for politicians to pass more restrictions, including a total abortion ban. These deeply personal decisions about pregnancy belong to patients and their trusted medical providers, never the government. Nebraska can end the ban and stop political interference with two votes — one against Initiative 434 and one for Initiative 439,” said Allie Berry, Campaign Manager of Protect Our Rights.

In total, 580 medical professionals signed the open letter. A full-page print ad will run in the Omaha World-Herald, The Lincoln Journal Star, and other newspapers throughout the state.

IInterview requests and medical professionals who wish to sign the letter should contact media@protectourights.com.
